What could be the cause of my puppy's horrible breath?

and how can I get rid of it? She eats Iams smart puppy food and shes 8 weeks old
Answers:
Do you have any cats? When my dog was a puppy, he thought our cat's litter box was a "snack tray". Might be a dental problem too as someone else mentioned.
Licking his bum
maybe a bad tooth already.. get it checked out
Dog breath is nasty. Remember they lick their own bums and eat their own poo in addition to their regular food. Go to your pet store--they have "breath" solutions for dogs.
If milk bones won't cure it, it is probably a dental problem.
Puppies usually have horrible breath. You might want to think about putting her on a better food (like Nutro) or something. It might help. Also, patience.she will grow out of it.
needs dog biscuits also.
8 Weeks old. that is called puppy breath and it will go away on its own. but puppy breath is so much nicer than dog breath. if it is bothering you that much buy him a tooth brush and tooth paste and brush his teeth. after all when us humans have bad breath we brush ours.
It comes from their intestines. It will get better. She is still young and probably has alot of junk in her system from being in the womb.

You need to keep them on the expensive pet food. Its expenseive yes but their systems will function better, the breath better and their waste won't be so nasty.

Do not feed them wet food. Always dry food and don't leave food down.. Feed two or three times a day and then pick up the food. Dogs will eat and eat and eat and eat.the dry food is made to expand when wet. So the more they eat the more it gets packed into their intestines.
Take him for a checkup, he may have something stuck in his mouth and it's rotting.
Puppy breath should be sweet, not offensive at all. I use Pedegree and my puppy has good puppy breath.

SO, it could be the food? I've never fed Iams.

It could be an internal problem, or poop eating, or something else he is eating. Or people food?? Or chew toys! Those rawhide things give icckky breath! Or meds/vitamins he is on?

Lastly, if it's not his health, go to walmart and get the SAMS brand dog breath biscuts. They are triangular shaped, come in a bag, not a box, and the biscuts are brown and green. They work GREAT on dog breath (my older dogs eat everything) wayyy better than milkbone or dog bones etc.
Just like in ppl the odor in the mouth comes from bacteria in the mouth. The tongue is like a shag carpet that holds spoiled food and bacteria. Having a teeth cleaning periodically for your dog would be the best thing and also buy him some dog toothpaste and follow the directions on how often you should brush them.
Puppy breath is the bomb!

Brush their teeth, check for stuck food, beware of butt licking
I agree with most of the answers puppy breath should not really smell as much as an adult dogs would the main reason for bad breath in a dog is a rotten tooth but i think the pup is to young for this yet unless its cracked a tooth on something id take the pup to the vets and they will tell you and treat the pup if needed the only other is the pup may just naturally have bad breath so start brushing the teeth now while she is young as it can be difficult when she gets older if you start now she wont mind when she is older good luck
Sounds like your puppy may already getting a tartar buildup! Maybe it is time to see the vet to have her teeth looked at. Although she is young, dogs/puppies are sometimes predispositioned to have bad teeth, just like humans!
Sara S is right. Its puppy breath and it will go away on its own. Just do what you do and ignore it, eventually it will go away. Enjoy your puppys bad breath cause when it goes away it will never come back.
you should take her to the vet. mine had the same problem. in her case was due to tartar build up. the vet said that bad breath is due to:
1. tartar
2. bad tooth
3. food
4. or intestinal problems
either way be safe and have her check by the vet.
Bad breath can be a sign of MANY possible diseases or underlying causes. Bad breath can be a sign of a gastrointestinal issue, a metabolic issue, even a heart problem. As far as eating Iams, even if your breeder did feed it, look at the label and check out the ingredients the culprit could be in there. Also, consider trying a different food (Canidae is an excellent food at about the same price as Iams, with better ingredients)

You should take your dog to the vet for blood work just to make sure there isn't an underlying issue also.
Problems with teeth as well as digestive problems will cause bad breath. Has it gotten into the trash recently or eaten something outside? Just because a food may be better quality does not mean it is the right food for your dog. If the dog has a sensitivity to any of the ingredients it could get bad breath.

My dog is sensitive to liver and peanut butter. It took a while before we figured out which ingredients were the problem and most dog foods contain one or both of these. But after we found a dog food that did not contain either, his digestion improved and no more bad breath or build up in the ears.
It could be her diet, or maybe a bad rotting tooth, or it could just be puppy breath lol Some puppies have really bad breath, and nothing is wrong with their teeth. Take your dog to a vet just in case she has something wrong with her teeth.
alot of times it is their teeth..you have to clean them just like a babys..
also if you smell of iams puppy food..you will notice that the pups breath smells just like it..it has a wierd odor..it also has corn in it..so then they will start smelling like corn chips..
