what causes sore itchy patches on my border collies lower body?

these patches only occur occassionally but drive her mad. The vet said that he thought her flee treatment wasnt working and advised us to use advocate, which we have and she has got these patches again. She does have a non allergic dried food, free of preservatives. She will not allow me to bathe her and I would never forcably do it as she is now 14years old and I dont want to put her under any stress. Any Ideas to make her days a lot more comfortable in the autumn of her life. I love her dearly and just want to make her a happy baby!.

My old dog is gone now, but he used to get what the vet called "hot spots" .personally, I don't think they know what else to call them. There were no fleas.I believe it's just plain dry skin due to old age.

I used the veggie only dog food, non allergic dry food, nothing worked. Finally I decided to buy some polysporin for kids and Penetan cream.(used for diaper rash)..he would try to lick it off, so I would sit with him til he gave up that idea.

He used to think it was just great getting papered like that..

Give it a try if you like, worked for me and my old fellow..he lived to be 18

Nice to see that you care so much for you dog..
good luck
Ask your vet if your dog could possibly be allergic to weeds of some sort. my dog has the problem and won't stop licking. He suggested "claritin" It seems to be working.
They might be what's called "hot spots." My dog had them and I put an antibiotic cream on them and they cleared up.
This supplement is worth a try.. It really rejuvenates the olsters, and helps with the allergies> http://springtimeinc.com/product/121/2. they are an excellent company, and their products are organic and helpful..They ship fast!

As the condition comes and goes, I would think it might be Atopy, which is seasonal..there are some suggestions on this site> http://www.petalia.com.au/templates/stor.
I am going to assume that by her lower body, you mean her belly.

These patches can be a number of things. They can be something as simple as dry skin, they can be an allergic reaction to something, or they can even be caused by some sort of bacteria in her coat acting up.

The dry skin is a simple one to solve with just some mild baby lotion. But the allergic reaction could be caused by serveral different things, and a dog food that treats alergies wont always help.

Think of certain things like carpet cleaners, floor cleaners, or the laundry detergant that you wash her bedding with. Do these patches seem to occur after you use this products? If so, then assume that you have found your answer, and try switching products to see if that helps. And always make sure to check and see a product you are using to freshen the fabrics in your home (i.e.) Fabreeze are safe to use around pets. I believe that Fabreeze has been responsable for poisoning cats after they have walked on a freshly sprayed surface and then licked themselves.

If it is a bacterial thing, then take your dog to the vet the next time these patches occur. Ask him to do a biopsy of the patches to test for parasites and such. He will then perscribe antibiotics, and you will most likely have to give your dog a bath with antifungal soap that he will give you.

Next time it happens wash her in warm water with salt in it, works really well, you need to do it every day twice a day but your dog will love it, Just put a face cloth in the salted, warm water squeeze it out and rub on the itchy patch
hi, i can relate to your problem , i have a boarder collie 1%26#92; 2 wolf and only though she is only 6 years old, off and on over the years she gets what i believe to be called hot spots which could be caused by numerous things from a reaction to there diet , fleas, flea treatment, table scrapes, board um, stress, old age .could even have gotten it from another dog .with dogs, like us humans they can get bad habits too,we tend to bite are finger nails, make pick spots etc, that are hard to brake, for my dog when she gets her raw spots neosporin first aid antibiotic ointment works great not only dose the dog not like the taste but it clears it up real fast and they don't mind it put on because it dose not burn. for bathing walgreens carries what is called a dry shampoo in there hair product department ,work it in, brush it out, then apply vitamen e oil for dryness and then put the neosporin on, if that don't work you could get her a head cone from your vet , which won't allow her to naugh on her self.
Could she be allergic to her bedding, or the washing powder or fabric conditioner you use to clean it? My old dog had this problem; flea allergy on his back and contact allergy underneath.
Try giving her a plain white cotton bedding, towels or sheets will do. Boil wash once a week with a tiny amount of Fairy for baby clothes and no conditioner. Definately never use detergent.
If she lies on the carpet get her a cotton rug or towel.
The other thing that could kick this off is grass pollen.
Are you using shake and vac on your carpets, if so that is the worst thing you can use around a dog as it gives them a type of eczema that drives the poor dogs insane, heat can also cause it too, I hope your baby is alright and on the mend soon, good luck.
Although you should ask a vet, I've been told by a number of vets that 'shake %26 vac' is a very common allergy, so if you've used that, it'll take a good few vacumes to remove that one. There are so many allergy causes that the vet will recognise for you.
