what can you give your dog for indigestion?
Answers:
Often, indigestion is caused by gas. I use the store brand Mylicon Drops (simethicone) available in any drug store, and most grocery stores. I treat my small dog with the dose of a human 2 year old baby. Most of the time, the Mylicon will take care of stomach discomfort in dogs, without your having to give anything else. The relief of the gas will take care of any discomfort.
If that doesn't quite do the trick:
You can give Tagamet (cimetidine) 10mg/kg or Pepcid (famotidine) 0.55mg/kg.
One kilogram equals 2.2 pounds, so a 25 pound dog weighs 11.36 kilograms. (25 divided by 2.2 equals 11.36 pounds)
Cimetidine comes in 200 mg tablets. 10mg times 11.36 equals 113.6, which is a tad more than a half a tablet. I'd just give the half a tablet.
Famotidine is available in 10mg tablets. 0.55mg times 11.36 equals 6.25mg, which is a bit more than one half a tablet. I'd just give a half a tablet.
Of course, these dosages are for dogs whose health is otherwise sound, such as no kidney or liver problems. Those affect the metabolism, and so dosages would have to be lowered.
My own dog is 11 pounds, or 5 kilograms. She gets 50 mg cimetidine (1/4 tablet), or 2.75 mg famotidine (I give 1/4 tablet).
How do you know he has indigestion?
i have a bullmastiff and she dosnt get indigestion infact im not sure she even digests at all
Why do you think the dog has indigestion?
Grass.
Seriously. Take him or her outside for a walk, naturally instinctinve to your dog, he/she will begin to chew on the grass. Don't stop her/him. That's what they do to cure their stomach problems.
I read somewhere that Pure Pumpkin, not the pie filling, is supposed to work well for their digestive system. You can buy canned at the grocers. But I'd still consult your vet first. :)
If you are sure it is indigestion, and you've consulted a vet-Try simethicone- Gas-X, or any of the products for gas. Especially if the dog is large and or large chested, they are prone to "bloat"
Here's a site with some otc meds that are safe for otherwise healthy dogs. It gives the dosages by weight.
