Hi

Well I assume you have given him chew toys already..
Labs love to chew.. I had one eat the leg of a sofa while I was at teh grocery! Could have killed him!

We got him to stop biting down and chewing by blowing up Surgical gloves into a balloon and letting him play with them ( supervised) If he chewed or bit down BOOM loud pop and it was gone.

In the end he did not chew up anything, and was a very soft mouth on his toys etc.

The down side of that process.

He got pretty nervous around other bangs like Fireworks, thunder and would not have been able to be used for hunting as the sound of a gun would have made him cower and prob pee himself!

But he stopped chewing everything!

I would not use this approach unless you can watch him with the goves so he does not eat the broken pieces.

It may take a few gloves

When he does NOT pop one reward him. when he pops one scold him

Dont sub balloons for teh gloves.. gloves are heavier and have fingers for carrying.. they are also safer

WOrked for me..

Good Luck

Wismom
play with him ..dog chew because they are Bord,,not getting enough Attn and play time.play with him more. and give him some chew toys.
haha i suggest you can go to read this very nice book "Marley and me" which tells of a family's life with a labrador that eats everything. Rings a bell to your own situation? Labs r like this, its in their mischievous blood. I think constraining them is not a good idea. A playful lab is so wonderful!
I had a similar problem, and had to removethings from the room she was in, and close the other doors. Eventually she got better and we could slowly put things back. Also, chew toys, and a bit of discipline. When she does something bad, tell her off, and maybe get a water spray bottle, and every time you see her about to chew something, spray her. That worked with my cat.
Dude, a lab is a WORKING dog. I'd be willing to bet a week's pay that you don't have him on a regular working and training schedule, do you?

A bored lab is dangerous to both your home and mental health. Start giving the dog a direction to channel his bred-in energy. Be careful, tho. You might just find that having a well trained dog is actually (gasp) fun!
If these nasty little habits are going on while you are not home and he is left unattended, I would crate him..make sure it is large enough for his growing and he can lay down and be comfortable. It is not uncommon with that breed of dog to have chewing going on. Labs are very social dogs and need a lot of attention. Two methods I found worked was having a spray bottle with water and when you catch him in the act give one squirt around the neck and yell off, and if water is not your thing rolled up newspaper and crack it your hand and yell off. Your dog is really a puppy until he is 2 and he will get over it. Just do not make the mistake of giving him an old shoe.how can a dog tell the difference between an old pair and a new pair!
Get the dog some puppy training and spend more time with him. Your dog is bored. you can get products to spray on these areas to detour him from chewing.
