What can I do to help my dog quit scratching himself. He's got himself red & almost raw in spots??

This just started 2 days ago, and it constant, I checked for fleas but saw none. I don't know what could be wrong.

This is the time of year that Atopy is the worse..Check this out to see if it fits..>> http://www.petalia.com.au/templates/stor.
Another possibility is food allergies, most commonly corn, wheat and soy..
However, as the onset is this season, (pollen) I would suspect the Atopy..
this is also set off by household chemicals, such as Swiffer Wet Jets, Carpet cleaners, Grass fertilizers, air fresheners, etc..
So, if you do sleuthing and come up with zilch..it is most likely from pollens or his food..

If it is pollens and dust mites, or mold/mildew, the hepa home air filters really help..and they are good for the human family as well!
Very likely to be a food allergy. Ask your vet about ordering hypoallergenic food. Do not give any table scraps. You could give him some benadryll.
If it is not food allergy related, he could be allergic to dust, pollen, or something else.
Use a dog shampoo for sensitive skin and try a cone collar to stop the scratching until he heals.
Did you use a flea comb? If not, do so. If you comb out flea dirt, he's got fleas.
Or it could be hot spots, or an allergy.
Don't wait to get him to a vet, the longer you wait the worse it will get and the more it will cost you to treat it.
Get rid of the fleas. Even though you mnay not see them I can almost guarantee you they are present. Some dogs can be highly allergic to them.
If your dog is scratching this bad-YOU NEED TO CARRY TO A VET. These raw spots could turn into HOT SPOTS.
take him to the vet he could have a skin allergy. I have a cockerspaniel and he has skin issues so we have to take him to a skin specialist. Good luck
allergies. Needs antibiotic from a vet or just give the dog a bath in a mild soap and watch for any changes in diet or environment. Use that frontline for fleas, it works. My dog gets allergies and itches like crazy. Usually time of season or something outside that causes it.
I have a golden retriever.who is going to be a yr old 2morro.and he have been having the same problem too..twice so far..I took him to my vet and he was on Steriods and antibiotics for 21 days.and he is fine now. Itz nothing serious.sometimes it might be the food.if you have changed the dog food sometime recently. Also give him a bath once every ten days that keeps his coat clean and stops him from lickin around. Just take him to the vet get him chkd.and keep him clean. Also ask ur vet to provide the lamp-shade kinda collar.and it wud actually stop him from licking it more and getting it raw!

Hope this helps..and give him my love :)
If it is a food allergy, start feeding him oatmeal and meat with no fat. Start with chicken. You can add dog vitamins if you wish and see if this does not help. should in at leat three days or so. If it is a skin condition, sometimes it is as simple as dry skin. If you are using any chemicals on him, stop now and use a dog conditioner and see it this does not help. Beyond that it could be more sever allergies that cannot be diagnosed without a vets knowledge. And I am not one. Just me two cents. good luck.
It cold be several different things. Dogs have allergies just like humans he may have come into contact with something hes allergic to. Try an oatmeal bath and giving him some childrens benedryl for the itching until you can get him to the vet.
Regardless if you saw fleas or not you should have him on "Advantix". You are treating him for heart worms I hope? If not you need to give him "Heart Guard". For this immediate problem spray the affected areas three to four sprays, two to three times a day with "GentaVed topical spray". Also apply "Tritop" twice a day and give him two "Amitriptylines" twice a day. It would be best not to delay. Before you start you might give a bathe in medicated shampoo. Does this appear it might be mange?

God Bless you both and the Southron People
Scatch it for him.
the same thing happened to my dog. It is called a hot spot. this is when there is an iritation in your dogs skin and he keeps itching it. I would go to the vets office and get a cone for you dogs head, and also some lotion.
your dog seems to have a bad internal or external allergies it depends on what the spots look like. usually food allergies the hot spots are on the backside by the tail and they shake their head that can be treated by changing the food to a lamb and rice mix dry. and give him a benedryl tablet every six hours until the food takes effect which is usually within 12 to 24 hours however if these hot spots are under the belly these are external allergies such as carpet fresh if he is laying on a blanket he may be allergic to the detergents . bath him in an oatmeal bath they sell for dogs and again benedryl until it sub sides .. process of elimination. try to identify the cause and then make the necessary changes.. some dogs have been known to have grass allergies so to walk him where the grass is short and do not let him lay in it.he could have dry skin did you bath him recently. you can put a little baby oil on these spots ONLY if they appear to be flaky.. again process of elimination but in the mean time give him the benedryl to get some itch relief. good luck
You should take him to the vet, it could be mange, or he could have some kind of allergies, but take him to the vet to get a skin scraping done to test for mange!
There are many reasons why a dog will scratch and chew at his skin until is red and raw. The open sores then may become infected.

Take your dog to the vet as soon as possible. He or she will examine your dog to find the cause of the intense itching. Medication and/or shampoo may be recommended to help your dog feel more comfortable.
some over teh counter hotspot treatments work. keep it clean. and you may want to take him to the vet for allergy shots
