Mickey P didn't get it quite right. Dachshund is a type of dog, either short or wiry hair that was used for badger hunting not ferrets. That was more the line for terriers, like the Jack Russell beast. German..Dachs (Plural Dachse)= Badger (s). We don't do that any more of course!
