What can I do for my dog?

She has kennel cough. I took her to the vet and now she is three pills. She probably feels really horrible. I can't take her to the dog park. I took her with me to work today. She keeps sneezing and coughing. She also throws up. Can I do something to make her feel better?
Answers:
Just keep her warm and comfortable. Only take her for short walks, she will get tired easily. If she likes sweet things, give her some honey, pour some on a saucer for her to lick up, this will help to sooth her throat. Don`t give her too much food and what you do give her, make sure it is easily digest-able.Cut out biscuits, they will aggravate her throat and irritate her cough. When you are in the house, let her sit with you for company, stroke her often, so she will not feel lonely. We feel rotten when we have a cough or are `under the weather,`so do dogs. She may be feeling afraid, not knowing what is happening to her.Give her encouragement so she knows that you understand how she is feeling.I am so sorry that she is unwell and I am sure that she will soon be fit as a fiddle again. Take good care of her. Best wishes.
Try chicken soup.
im not really sure but i hope ur dog gets better
pamper her! the meds will help her, she just needs lots of TLC in the meantime. make her up a nice soft bed in a cool spot, and spend as much time as you can with her! Hope she's feeling better soon!
there is a place called bowsers bath in tigard by goodwill.they have solid gold food that is really good for yuor dog.it has lots of good nutrients in it.trust me i would know are dogs had some of those symptoms and they don't anymore because of that food.
I,M A VET ASST. YOU SHOULDN,T BE TRANSPORTING YOUR DOG WHEN ITS SICK OR TAKING IT TO THE PARK, A QUIET COMFY PLACE IS BEST UNTIL YOUR DOG FEELS BETTER.MAKE SURE YOUR DOG HAS PLENTY OF FOOD AND WATER HANDY.JAMIE
put her in the bathroom and run hot water in the shower and just let her breath in the steam to moisten her throat or give her some warm honey and lemon juice, and a lot of love and petting. good luck.
just give her lots of love and i see your already doin that..sorry about your dog;she knows your with her 100 percent
Oh poor baby. I'm so sorry. If I were you, I would call the vet back the first thing in the morning.

I don't want to scare you, but I adopted a pup from one of my local shelters, only to find out when I brought her home that she had Kennel Cough. she wasn't vomiting, but only coughing. To make a long story short, the Kennel Cough turned into pneumonia which was a precursor to Distemper and I lost her, even though she was under treatment beginning the day after I adopted her. This was a year and half ago though.

I guess what I'm trying to tell you is check with the vet again and tell him or her what's happening. I hope I didn't frighten you too much.Kennel Cough is highly curable, but I will never forget how that dry hacking cough sounded.

I hope your baby feels better soon. (((( Hugs )))
Try to keep her as comfy a possible and when she gets better take her to the vet to get the kennel cough vaccine.
Talk to your vet to see if this is normal "recovery".
Keep her calm, don't stress her by having her exert herself, she is having difficulty breathing, so running and playing and such are out until she is well. Put blankets down where she likes to lay, so she doesn't catch a cold from the floor, because she is susceptible now. Lots of love, your soothing voice and petting whenever possible. I hope she recovers.
Put a humidifier in her room, with a menthol vapor. You do want to keep taking her for several short walks per day. And coughing isn't bad..it is clearing out all of the fluid in her lungs. Lying around all day and NOT coughing will cause that fluid to pool and potentially cause pneumonia.
Just keep giving her the tablets the vets perscribed,is your dog up to date with all its needles as they shouldnt get that if they are.Other wise maybe take it to another vet for a second appinion, you must tell your vet about her vomiting as she may have to go on another type of medication
Take her to the vet she needs a perscription. Kennel cough is very contagious.

what can I do for my chocolate lab?

her name is cookie and she is 1yr old.I have noticed what looks like dandruff on her pretty heavy lately. Its just a ton of white flakes all over her.Is this what it is?or something else?what can I do?
Answers:
Sounds like dry skin oatmeal shampoo works really well and there also spray on conditioners sold in the pet stores. Try not to over bathe her Labs have a natural oil and too much washing can diminish that and cause more dry skin. Their food is also highly important my Lab had tons of coat issues and has always been on the top of the line dog foods. I switched to Royal Canin LAbrador Retriever 30 which is especially designed for Labs. They have all the nutrients for their coats. Since being on the food his coat has improved a 100%
It is dry skin. take her to the vet.
It looks like she has very dry skin. Take her to a good pet shop and have them look at it. There's shampo you can try and they will suggest the right thing. Go to a big one, like Pet smart or where they allow dogs into the store.
Dry skin as noted above is probably the reason. You may also check for fleas too. Fleas leave flaky stuff on dogs too, but it is usually not white.
Could be dry skin or allergic reaction. A good top quality dog food should help if its dry skin. Also don't bath her, dogs really only need a bath once or twice a year. Give her some good brushings, it will help to stimulate the skin to produce oils.
If it's an allergy changing her food may help. I would only take her to the vet if she is showing signs of distress. Biting, scratching herself or other signals that she is uncomfortable.
It could be dry skin. Is the weather changing where you live? I know that my skin tends to get dry when the seasons change. It's also possible that she has sensitive skin. Take her to the vet and see if there is a shampoo/conditioner that they recommend.

What can I do for my chihuahua he acts like he has a pulled muscle in his neck. He crys when he turns to the L

He just started acting funny this evening. He holds his head sideways and crys out like he is in pain when he turns quick to the left and starts shaking. Anyone know what it could be? Or what I could give him for pain reg asprin maybe?
Answers:
Don't give him aspirin.dogs don't handle aspirin the way we do and you could easily hurt him more. Try a warm wash cloth, or warm fleece blanket and call your vet in the morning. He may have strained his neck and might need muscle relaxers etc. One of my Greyhounds actually strained his lower back right after we adopted him because he had fleas (we didn't know) and he kept trying to turn himself into a pretzel to scratch the base of his tail..scared me to death when I woke up one day to see his leg give out from underneath. We had to give him muscle relaxers and keep him quiet for about 10 days and he has been fine ever since. Good luck.hope your dog feels better soon.
See your vet ASAP! Go to a 24 hour pet hospital.
It's true! You must go to a vet. while you're at it don't touch him there and try not to hurt him.
Yes, Give him 1/2 an asprin, or a full baby asprin. Take him to the vet ASAP!
Baby aspirin. Was he playing , like running around and jumping. I was playing fetch with my dog and he slipped a disc. Take him to the vet . If it is something like that, they will give him medicine to keep him calm and relaxed so the disc can heal. Good luck
That's a potentially big freaking deal. If he's more than a couple of years old, I'd be highly suspicious of a ruptured cervical (neck) vertebral disc. It's incredibly painful, and can lead to paralysis.

A regular adult aspirin is enough to treat a 55-65# dog. I'm hoping your chihuahua is not quite that big. ;-)

Plus..if it IS an IVD (intervertebral disc) problem, aspirin is CONTRA-indicated, even at the correct dose. That means it will actually make the problem worse. That's because aspirin causes impaired platelet function. If he further injures himself, his blood won't clot properly if it starts bleeding around the disc, which can speed up the paralysis problem and cause lots of problems during surgical correction, if that becomes needed. So..do NOT give aspirin in any dose whatsoever, until an IVD problem is ruled out.

If he's a puppy, it could be a malformed/luxated vertebral problem in the neck that is just now flaring up. Or it could be a fractured vertebra if someone accidentally stepped on him (easy to do with the teeny-weeny ones.)

But.it might not be anything but a 'pulled' muscle, too..or an ear infection.

Since the potential consequences of the first 3 scenarios are so severe (including death), however, I wouldn't take a chance on waiting til tomorrow if I were you. PLEASE take him in to an animal emergency clinic if your own DVM does not provide after-hours service. He's in pain, and needs appropriate medication. 45 minutes to an hour to get to an emergency clinic is not unreasonable if it will save his life or prevent paralysis.

If an emergency clinic is not within that distance, it is required by law (by most states' Veterinary Practice Acts) for your DVM to make arrangements to see his/her own emergencies whenever the office is closed. Call their regular number, and you should at least get a recording telling you how to reach whichever doctor is on call for that clinic.
My guess would be that he fell off of something and hurt his neck. As for the asprin, Dogs don't handle asprin like we do. It works much better on them than us. Make sure that it is asprin though because Ib and Advil will kill a dog! For a Chi I would only give him about 1/4 of a tab or 1/2 of a baby asprin. You need to check his temp and look for swelling. Taking him to a vet it the right thing to do but if you can't you can't. But I would do it as soon as you can.
Hi,
I just took my chihuahua to the vet because he was exhibiting similar symptoms. He shakes and cries when we pick him up. His head tilts to one side and his head also twitches. We were referred to an Animal Hospital 45 minutes away and the dog went to the emergency room. He was exhibiting other symptoms like weak limbs and his little legs just started collapsing. He is now in the hospital overnight. They want to do an MRI and suspect it could be a disc in his back that is causing the problems. The estimate to do the MRI, give pain med's, etc. was $2,700! The operation, if this is the problem, will be another $3,000. The costs are rediculous, but we figure if it is something that can be cured we need to do what we can. Please email me if you want. We are currently waiting on the results. His shaking is pain I think so you should get him to the vet and keep him as still as you can. Email: sacjedi397@hotmail.com

what can I do for a constipated puppy? she is almost 3 weeks?

We took her to the vet today and he did a warm water enema. Tonight I can barely get her to eat her stomach is so bloated. She goes to the bathroom a little and has gas when I wirk with her but she acts like it hurts her when I massage her. Any breeder out there that might be able to give me some tips
Answers:
Did your vet x-ray her? She might very well have something STUCK in her, blocking stuff from moving through her intestines. Poor, poor baby. :( If she is just constipated, maybe laying her on a heating pad (on low heat) would ease her pain a little.
With a pup, I'd take it to the vet.
You should take her back to the vet, I would ask WHY she is having these troubles. Good Luck KG
I found this on the net as a suggestion to help. they say adding vegetables such as peas or green beans helps prevent it also.

exercise is a great constipation cure. A long walk or a vigorous game of fetch does a great job of kick-starting a sluggish bowel. With a combination of vegetables and exercise, your dog will be as regular as clockwork in no time.
take it to the vet. being a puppy, it may of eaten something and it is stuck. solid pack pumpkin in a can is good for constipation..but still, call the vet. there is also a vet that has a message board on
www.ivillage.com
Puppies love to chew apart ANYTHING. That includes socks and underwear. She may have swallowed a large portion of a sock and it won't digest. I've been a dog trainer for years and have seen this often in young pups who have access to such things. Look for missing pieces to rubber toys as well. Rawhide chewies are often the culprit as well. If she gets those - take them away until she's at least 8-10 weeks old - and then monitor them closely. They pull off large pieces and swallow them whole. In that case warm water enemas won't help. It takes too long to break those down. The vet should have done x-rays.

Other than that, the enema will take some time to work it's way through the puppie's system. Pull up any food and leave plenty of fresh water out. No treats either. That may only make it worse. Try to handle her as little as possible. Speak soothingly and watch for any signs that she has to go out. Give in to her everytime at this point.
There's a wonderful free website that you can go to and tells many reasons, cures, and symptoms of constipation in dogs. It's called dogpro.com. I could have copied and pasted but there's a ton of information on that site. Good luck. Poor puppy!
I am writing you from what I am setting here reading in my medical book for dogs. the best thing to do is give her is Dulcolax laxative. the dose for dogs is 5-20mg. perday. you can also use Milk of magnesia 7-25 cc's per pound one time only, or you can use mineral oil 10-50 cc's added to there food. If I can help any futher I am at mfroeh@yahoo.com
I'm sorry but you may have to consider letting her go. When a puppy is that young and already having complications, there are usually other problems as well.
Has the mother rejected the puppy? Why is he off to the side? Hope I can help you some.
She is only 3 weeks old. Her digestive system has not matured enough for puppy food. That is the problem. She needs to be on puppy formula! Poor thing, I hope she makes it.
Hmm, sounds to me like she is a it young to be away from her mother? There are nursing formulas on the market that you can get at larger pet stores that may be easier for her to digest than the food you are currently giving her. I also agree that your vet should be your best source for her care.I wonder that he is not changing her feed since it looks to me on first glance that her diet is suspect. Gee, I hope she is getting better! What kind of pup is she? Pardon me, but, at three weeks I would think that she may be too young to be weaned.
The pup is definately to young to be away from her mother, you should always slowly start them off on puppy food while they are still nursing. I don't know what to with a constipated pup, its never happened to me before, but I would try whole milk or puppy formula and see if it does the trick
at 3 weeks mommy is still helping stimulate the bowel .. with a warm wash cloth keep rubbing the area. this should help if not go to the bakers isle in the grocery store and buy pumpkin pie mix not the ready made it will be in the smaller can not to much just a little and it will releave her pumkin is a natural laxative ecpecially for dogs and cats and it is cheap and handy. good luck
Try olive oil it is a natural lubercate a teaspoon should work? Depending on size check with vet but you could give her medicine. I had a dog woth diarreha and gave him liquid medicine and he was fine the next day. Also if she will eat apples or prunes it will work. And they won't hurt her.
Try a little karo syrup
Gosh it just amazes me how many people don't know how help little ones like yours to go to the bathroom .. what she needs right now is her mummy to clean her ..which helps her go to the bathroom .. since her mummy is not around you will have to be the second best or her foster mum

Please take a warm wet ( not hot ) cloth and stroke her little female parts and bottom ..be gentle but firm in your cleaning .. she "should" go .

you see the mummy does clean up the first few weeks

concerning their babys waste so in a sense your doing the same thing with the clothes .

one good thing that will come out of it .. its a very bonding thing to do .

you will need to keep this up a few times a day till she is old enough and well enough to handle it on her own

please let me know how it is doing

Best of luck
Ask your vet if it's OK to give her a drop or two of over the counter gas relief medicine(simethicone) for babies, and a small piece of a baby glycerin suppository to help with the constipation. Also, maybe the formula doesn't agree with her.You could try goats milk with a 1/2 tsp.corn syrup per.cup. I hope the poor little thing is alright .It sounds as if you are doing a good job trying to take care of her.Good luck.
