About 10 years ago, while I was walking to catch a bus, I passed a house where there was a German shepherd in the yard. The dog started walking alongside me, and when we got to a crowded area he would growl at anyone who came near me or even passed me on the sidewalk. People started yelling at me to control "my dog", but he was NOT my dog.I had never seen him before. When I got to the bus stop I sat down on a bench and the dog put his front legs up on my lap and just looked into my face. I went into a store, hoping he would go away, but when I went out 10 minutes later he was still there. I sat down again, and again he put his front legs up on my lap. When my bus came, he tried to get on with me, but of course he was shut out. He ran after the bus until he could no longer keep up.
To this day remember this dog and wonder WHY he acted that way.

A similar thing happened to me when I was in Italy. There were a group of stray dogs that lived in the village and everyone shooed them away. Every time we walked into the village the dogs would follow us and stay with us and wait for us while we went into the stores.
We were staying in a Franciscan Monastery and I found it strange that the monks would kick @ them and yell "via, Via"( go, go).

We had a campfire in the woods one night and the all-white female dog sat @ the end of the trail with her back to us as if watching out for anything that may come up the trail.

Someitmes we can be entertaining angels unaware of who they are. Obviously, the dog saw something in you, something it liked.

What does one do when his/her dog's knee keeps popping out of place (read details)?
Hello! Any info would be appreciated. This is the situation:
-My dog (American Eskimo) recently keeps popping out his HIND knees.
-We've been to the vet multiple times regarding this issue, AND have gotten medication.
-BUT his knees are still popping out (and we realize it might be because the medications have not been "kicking in" yet but may in the future)
-HOWEVER, it is still worrisome when his knees are out and cannot walk. The vet knew how to pop it back into place, but we do not. Any info?

The problem is knees NOT hips or elbows.
Unfortunately, there are some breed that have tendon and ligament problems that lead to knees (or here hocks) displacing.
Sometimes it can be corrected with surgery.
For that, I would recommend a trip to the nearest vet school/clinic to an orthpedic specialist.
Alternatively, it could be a cruxcator ligament injury.
That has become a pretty standard surgery - too many couch potatoes going out leaping around and blowing out the ligament from being unfit.
You need to ask your vet WHY the hock is displacing.
Drugs won't keep the hock in place it will only alleviate the pain.
In the meantime,put him in a nice comfortable bed with water and food in reach without rising and help him up every 3-4 hours to go outside.

Although a few patients can be maintained for long periods, even years, with pain medication and anti-inflammatory drugs, this is usually not the answer. There are three basic surgeries, all of which attempt to eliminate or reduce the pressure between the two arthritic surfaces.
The first surgery involves the cutting of the pectinious, which is one of the muscles that try to add stability to the joint by forcing the two bones back together. When it is cut or has a portion removed, the two bones move apart. We have had varied success with this procedure in our practice. It sometimes eliminates all pain and further surgery is not required.
The second type of surgery is the removal of the femoral head. No bony attachment between the leg and the rest of the body sounds radical, but the dog's body will compensate as the outer muscles in the area become stronger and hold the leg in place. This allows near-normal motion and use. Remember that the front leg of the dog is held to the body by muscles only; there is no bone-to-bone connection between the front legs and the rest of the skeleton. By removing the femoral head we eliminate the pain of the two bones coming in contact with each other. We have many active dogs in our practice that were able to continue their active lifestyles because of this surgery.
The final surgical technique available to a patient with dysplasia is total replacement with an artificial joint made of steel and high-impact plastic. This is very expensive and rarely necessary.
Throughout all of this, please remember that the individual dog affected with dysplasia can usually be helped to live a life that is generally free of pain. I would like to stress that fact.

The most likely cause in a healthy dog would be hookworm.

The truth is wolf puppies lick their mom's face so that the mom will regurgitate food for the puppy. Yum, yum. So when a dog licks a human's face, they want food. We have reinforced the licking with our ooohs and aaahs. And frankly, it's OK by me!

Part of it is affection. Part of it is they like the taste of salt on our skin or the taste of whatever lotion you may have on your skin.
It's not bad but I would not suggest allowing them to lick you around your mouth due to the transfer of germs.

Dogs lick faces for several reasons:
a) It's a throw-back to their wolf ancestry. Wolves greet one another with mouth and muzzle licks after returning home from a hunt.
b) Puppies often lick their mother's mouth and muzzle looking for food. When the pups are about 4-5 weeks old, the mother will often regurgitate (vomit) her last meal to give them more food to eat. When hungry, the pups will then lick at the mother's face and mouth trying to get her to vomit again.
c) We also teach dogs to "kiss" us when we respond happily to being licked in the face.
d) In some dogs this can be a sign of dominance. If the dog can reach as high as your head he is displaying the fact that, in the pack heirarchy, he's on the "same level" as you are.
The problem with letting dogs lick your face is that they also lick everything else with their tongues, and if they've picked up germs, bacteria, worms or other parasites with their tongue they can transfer them to you. If you want to continue to let your dog lick your face, just make sure your dog is healthy and that you wash up afterwards.

I think pets understand us far more than what we give them credit for. What pets really understand are phrases we use over and over. Example say puppy's name with a exuberant I LOVE YOU! and a kiss. Use a different tone for No. They really understand different tones well. My cat will respond to Hi Sancho by the tone I use, with one simple meow. I know by her tone when she says "I'm hungry". So she's trained me to her tones as well. As for face licking, yeah pets have bacteria (who knows where that tongue was prior to your face), but lets face it - it's hard to turn down a kiss.

Part of it is affection. Part of it is they like the taste of salt on our skin or the taste of whatever lotion you may have on your skin.
It's not bad but I would not suggest allowing them to lick you around your mouth due to the transfer of germs.

Dogs lick faces for several reasons:
a) It's a throw-back to their wolf ancestry. Wolves greet one another with mouth and muzzle licks after returning home from a hunt.
b) Puppies often lick their mother's mouth and muzzle looking for food. When the pups are about 4-5 weeks old, the mother will often regurgitate (vomit) her last meal to give them more food to eat. When hungry, the pups will then lick at the mother's face and mouth trying to get her to vomit again.
c) We also teach dogs to "kiss" us when we respond happily to being licked in the face.
d) In some dogs this can be a sign of dominance. If the dog can reach as high as your head he is displaying the fact that, in the pack heirarchy, he's on the "same level" as you are.
The problem with letting dogs lick your face is that they also lick everything else with their tongues, and if they've picked up germs, bacteria, worms or other parasites with their tongue they can transfer them to you. If you want to continue to let your dog lick your face, just make sure your dog is healthy and that you wash up afterwards.

I think pets understand us far more than what we give them credit for. What pets really understand are phrases we use over and over. Example say puppy's name with a exuberant I LOVE YOU! and a kiss. Use a different tone for No. They really understand different tones well. My cat will respond to Hi Sancho by the tone I use, with one simple meow. I know by her tone when she says "I'm hungry". So she's trained me to her tones as well. As for face licking, yeah pets have bacteria (who knows where that tongue was prior to your face), but lets face it - it's hard to turn down a kiss.

If your dog has white nails it's not too difficult to do. You only clip the ends and not where you can see pink. The pink part is the vein and will bleed if you cut it. Just take your time and do not take off too much at one time. Since your dog does not like it I would suggest clipping two per day, be firm and stick to your guns. What does it mean if my dog growls at her pups?
Today my dog growled at her pups and tried to bite one of them. I am told that dogs sometimes eat their young, but these pups are just under 3 weeks old, and she had been an excellent mother up until this point.
Then tonight, out of the blue, she growled and then half-barked, half-yelped at one of them. We tried to relax her, and she did initially, but then it happened again and she actually had the pup's head in her mouth. We're not sure what to do since we can't possibly feed all 11 of them without her. What does it mean, and what can be done to stop it?

You really need to help her out with feedings. Your poor mother dog probably has very sore nipples from all the feedings she has to do. At 3 weeks old, the puppies eyes are open and little pin teeth are starting to come in. 11 pups is too much for any dog. You can buy puppy formula and little bottles even at Walmart, so try to help her out. Also, contact your vet and ask what is a good soother for her sore nipples. Be sure to also check to make sure she doesn't have mastitis(infection in the milk glands) this will cause alot of pain and redness,fever and swelling in the breast tissue-mastitis could be deadly for mom and pups..consult your vet if you suspect any of these symptoms.
It could just be a bad day. Has she been away from the puppies at all?
She is just establishing pack dominance as leader.
This usally just means she's angry at them. If it dosn't stop in a few days contact the vet or the pound :).

Make sure she's getting enough to eat and drink herself and see that she takes a break once in awhile, away from the pups! Just keep an eye on her but I think she may just be exhausted!! I sure would be!!
WEll i have never had a dog that had babies but my cat did and when she would scrach them our hiss at them that ment she was pregnet again but i dunno if a dog can get preg. that fast . well thats all i got

If I were you, I would closely observe the behavior of both the mother AND the pup that she has "disciplined", already.
(It sounds like the pup's behavior was not acceptable, to her!)
I know that mother cats often take their kittens into their mouth, by that loose flap of skin just behind the head, in the neck area: and, then those cat mothers transport the kitten to somewhere safe, usually.
(Usually the cat mommy is just keeping her babies safe, that way).
As to the doggie mommy, I am less certain.
Dogs, I know, are not as "coordinated" as cats are: so, the "puppy-head-in-the-mouth" thing may be similar to what a cat does--but without the "accuracy" of getting it right!
(Know what I mean?)
(So, a dog ends up putting the pup's head entirely into her mouth, instead).
Just check the pup's behavior, first.

Note: Have you heard of mother dogs eating their young? I had always thought it was the father (or, non-father other male) that ate newborn pups--not the mother. I HAVE heard, though, of doggy moms who were just such bad mothers, at caring for their young, that they sat on their newborns and accidently smothered them, to death.

If I were you, I would closely observe the behavior of both the mother AND the pup that she has "disciplined", already.
(It sounds like the pup's behavior was not acceptable, to her!)
I know that mother cats often take their kittens into their mouth, by that loose flap of skin just behind the head, in the neck area: and, then those cat mothers transport the kitten to somewhere safe, usually.
(Usually the cat mommy is just keeping her babies safe, that way).
As to the doggie mommy, I am less certain.
Dogs, I know, are not as "coordinated" as cats are: so, the "puppy-head-in-the-mouth" thing may be similar to what a cat does--but without the "accuracy" of getting it right!
(Know what I mean?)
(So, a dog ends up putting the pup's head entirely into her mouth, instead).
Just check the pup's behavior, first.

Note: Have you heard of mother dogs eating their young? I had always thought it was the father (or, non-father other male) that ate newborn pups--not the mother. I HAVE heard, though, of doggy moms who were just such bad mothers, at caring for their young, that they sat on their newborns and accidently smothered them, to death.
Final thought: Has she had a litter before? If so, was she a good mother then?

The only reason to breed a crossbreed such as this would be for working purposes, and then only if both parents are exceptional in the field. Even still a well bred cocker or springer would generally be favoured over a crossbreed as with all crossbreeds every pup will be different and it's a bit of a gamble what parental traits the pups will inherit. Some people who breed this cross call them Sprockers, but really they should be called cocker/springer crosses. Calling them sprockers suggests that they are actually a breed..which they are not and is therefore deceptive. They should not be sold for anymore than a mongrel, just the cost of covering the proper care of a b1tch in whelp and the raising of healthy pups.

The whole mastiff family are a very large breed.
Neo's can be grey marle (different shades), or black marle.
They are very very strong and I would only recommend if you are familiar with the breed.
They make an excellent guard dog, and can easily bring an adult down.
They are head strong and aggressive and need a very experienced owner.
They are gorgeously huge and wonderful guard dogs. They look like a buff great dane in a way, but they tend to have slobber threads on each side of their mouth that when they shake it off, the slobbs can fly to the ceileings! They are great, I wish I had one.

We tried that a few years ago.. I was the poor sap who went out there into the cruel world to be abused by the general public. Check their references. Are they bonded? And of course what kind of experience do they have? But give them credit. It is not an easy job!

I have used mobile groomers and they were great and convenient. Just make sure they keep their work areas clean.
I've had them a few times and found them to be very convenient. It costs a little extra but my dogs are already home when the grooming is done. It's a nightmare getting four dogs over to a groomer and back even with the mini van.

What do you think of the doggie "car seats"?
At a few pet supply stores they are selling "doggie car seats" for small dogs. They are like a carrier for your small dog but they attatch to your seat so as to keep your dog safe while driving in the car. In case of an accident or such so that your dog or puppy doesnt go flying through the wind shield or so that your dog isnt distracting you while you drive. I have been reading up ALOT on taking care and training a puppy because we are getting one on Saturday and most say to keep your dog in a crate or carrier in the car to keep him safe while driving, but some people are giving me troubles when I say I want to get this "doggie car seat" for our puppy. Now I know my dog is not a baby but I still dont want anything to happen to her in case of an accident or sudden stop. It doesnt strap the pup in like a kid it is just like a carrier and very comfortable for the pup. What is your opinion please?

Dog seat belts work better. They go on the dog like a harness and clip into the seat belt. It uses the car's safety features, which is better than those seats. Get them at most large pet stores.

I think a harness and attatched to a seat belt works well, and the dog itself is secure.. not just the seat. I dont know it the seats allow you to secure the dog too.
I have one for my 14 week old Bichonpoo who weighs 5 pounds. She will be 10 pounds full grown. At first she would whine when I put her in it. But now she lies down in it and sleeps through all the car trips. It has a short tag with a clasp on the end that attaches to a collar or harness. I find it much better than putting her in a carrier in the car. The carrier can become a projectile in an accident. Word of caution however do not put the car seat in the front passenger seat unless you can deactivate the air bag. In an accident the air bag could suffocate the pup.
It's better than tying them to your bumper.

I am interested in dog grooming as a profession. I did a 1-summer dog grooming internship and enjoyed it. I did some grooming and a lot of watching.
Next, I talked to dog groomers and heard many complaints. Most say that they are way to busy and have arthritis or some other problem from working with their hands all day.
I would like to here opinions about this job from actual groomers or those that know a lot about the industry. Will I be dissappointed like so many others? Would dog training or boarding be a better career choice?
Answers:
I've been a groomer for 39 years. No carpal tunnel or other health issues as a result, but I have been bitten on a number of occasions, but in that time only 3 occasions sent me to the hospital.
The biggest problem I see with new groomers starting out is that the grooming schools in my area do a really poor job of preparing students for actually working in the industry. At best they've done a few breeds and a few different haircuts. Unlike grooming school where you will have most of the day to do one dog, in a shop environment you will need to be able to turn out 5-7 dogs a day in order to make a living at it. Mosr shops pay commission, and if you can't turn out several dogs a day you may earn less than minimum wage.
Grooming is hard work. Lifting, bending, cleaning up after "accidents", keeping your various body parts out of the mouth of a dog who does not like being handled, etc. all take a toll. Most groomers I know who have been at it longer than a few years do it because they love the job and the dogs they work with. A number of those who go into the profession thinking they will have a fun job playing with the puppies all day have a reality check as soon as they really start working and call it quits after a short time.
Many young people coming into this profession have a very poor work ethic and this is one business where that just won't fly if you expect to have a job for long. When a shop has 30 dogs booked in and a groomer just no-shows because she found something better to do that day, most employers don't realize until too late that they are shorthanded and the dogs for the day have already arrived. Finding and keeping good talented groomers was the most difficult part of running a grooming shop, and the primary reason I eventually sold my own shop after 12 years and opted to work for someone else.
Then there are the various shops you work at. Some are better than others in terms of pay and workload. I've worked for some that the owner takes all the easy and/or expensive dogs and enough for her to live off of and gives employees the rest, maybe only two or three a day. I've worked for others who seem to think their employees should be able to turn out a dozen dogs in a few hours, regardless fo the type of work needed. Employees in both cases end up quitting, either for lack of work or too much. Some owners keep their shops clean, some don't. Some maintain equipment, some don't. Some supply virtually anything in the way of expendable supplies, others provide close to nothing.
Truly, you have to love the business and be willing to spend time learning. I personally love it. My days are never quite the same, and I've met many wonderful people and their dogs, worked with many excellent groomers and generally have had a wonderful career.
Lots of backbreaking work,get bit,anal sacks,little hairs in your skin,crabby clients,and carpal tunnel. It was a load of fun. I stopped that after 5 years. Could do it NO longer!
I did it for a little while. I enjoyed working with the dogs, but some of the owners could be pretty crabby. But that's how it is anytime you have to deal with the public. If you love animals and enjoy grooming, then I say go ahead and do it. You can always go into training or boarding later. It never hurts to learn every aspect about dogs, and that includes grooming.

Ive been grooming for about 15 years. I don't regret it, and I cannot see myself doing anything else. I don't have carpal tunnel, but there are days where my back is just killing me at the end of the day. (however..I have back problems to begin with..non grooming related)
It's not playing with puppies all day. You will have to deal with pee, poop, bugs, crabby/picky owners, crabby dogs, dogs that bite, jump all over you, wiggle all over the place, hair in every part of your body.
It's not just knowing how to give a haircut either. You will need to know how to run/manage a business, some accounting (unless you are an employee) You need to know about shampoos, skin problems, equiptment maintence, people skills, breed styles, and you will need ALOT of patience!!
I went to a grooming school to train. And like CS said..I had 8 hours to groom ONE dog. By the end of my training, I was up to 2 LOL. And 90% of the dogs that came through that school, were perfect angels. I learned alot from school, and the instructors were amazing groomers. I just wish that they would have taught us a little more on how to deal with dificult dogs, owners, and help us build up our speed for "the real world".

What do you think of China's new rule of one dog per family ?
China last year slaughtered over 50,000 dogs due to a scare of rabies. So one dog per family is a way to cull dogs.

I think it's outrageously stupid and cruel. Families should be allowed to have as many dogs as they want. Well, within reason. The Chinese should've created a vaccination for the rabies, not slaughtered innocent dogs.

i think that it is a better idea then what they were doing i saw pictures of them beating dogs to death with long clubs i cried it was so heartbreaking. though it will be hard for the families that do have more than one dog to choose which one they keep.

I have seen videos of people in China skining dogs alive and hitting those dogs, they are the craziest and most cruel people alive, all because of money. Just curious to know since most of the show people on this site are American, how people feel about a brindle pug being shown in the ring last weekend in Canada and awarded a 1st place ribbon in it's class?

She has 2 brinde pugs entered in the Lower Mainland Dog Fancier, show at the end of the month, the biggest dog show in Canada. But honestly I do not know either way. Someone could have bred to another breed like a Boston, fudged the paper, got registered pugs and voila! Brindle pugs. If you have a brindle pug, love it! It is still a little fur buddy that loves you. If you want a brindle pug because it may become a cute fad like any other designer dog, remember that it is still a dog at the end of the day. what do you think of a germen sheperd and dobermen mix?
i have 4 kids 2, 4, 8, 11 and she is 2 yrs old and just got fix are they good dogs around children

I had a g.sheperd/doberman mix and he was great with my kids..just be sure to teach her and the kids some ground rules..kids shouldn't bother the dog while she's sleeping, eating or chewing on a bone..and the dog shouldn't be allowed to play to rough with the kids..or act aggressive with them.Since the dog is already two years old be sure to supervise at all times around the little ones until you are assured that she tolerates small chidren well. I had my dog for 13 years,he passed on 5 years ago, and we never had any problems.Good luck to you and your family and I wish you many, many years with your new addition to the family..
Both breeds can be great with children, so a mix has that potential. A lot of it depends on whether she's lived in a home with them before and if she genuinely seems to like them.
A wonderful dog for kids. Both are protective of their family. As long as she doesn't come with bad habits I don't see a problem getting her. Maybe you can have the chance for a trial visit first to see how she acts around kids. Even though both breeds are good with kids its usually best to get a puppy, if she hasn't been around kids it might be a too much for her. Overall a good choice but I would strongly suggest a trial visit with her age.
I'm not sure i would purchase a large adult dog, if you have children at home, you have no idea how the dog will react while eating, sleeping, being tugged on, laid on etc. i would not take the chance it takes one bite. if you want a dog , start with a puppy that you can train and know completely.

Just based on the breeds, it would be a good match for kids. But as with any dog you shouldn't leave it unsupervised around your small children. Little kids often don't yet fully understand how to treat dogs and you don't want them learning the hard way. As a general rule, the bigger the dog the better they are with kids. Little dogs tend to be more nervous and anxious around little hands, sudden movements, and loud noises.
Try a supervised visit with her and the kids and see how it goes. If she seems really skittish or aggressive then you need to reconsider. And definitely be sure to find out if she is food aggressive or not! Good luck!

I had a doberman and currently own a german sheppard mix, they can be excellent with kids, but it depends on how the dog was raised. Very important to know: Has it been with kids since it was a puppy? Have you seen how the the dog acts around your kids? Does it want to play and is really happy and friendly to be around them, or does she seem to shy away and act annoyed?
If it were a puppy, I would say go for it, the pup will grow with your kids and get used to them, but a 2 year old dog of that size and those breeds, and with your own kids being so young, I would be nervous.
Again, it depends on the dog, but please make sure the dog has been socialized from a very young age with kids and make sure your kids know how to respect the dog because it could be a dangerous mix.

What do you think of a electronic collar on the lowest setting for a yappy small dog? I?
I have an 8 month old Pomeranian puppy. She is the love of my life and her training is going well, HOWEVER, she yaps at everything and nothing has worked. She is never alone as she goes to work with me so there is no anxiety or lonliness. She is walked for 45 minutes twice a day minimum so she gets plenty of exercise. Otherwise, she is a beautiful, sweet %26 calm dog. Her bark is very high pitched and LOUD and I do not blame people for hating it. I take her everywhere I go but am starting to make enemies with her barking. I bought a DogTra Bark Collar and am charging it up as I write this. I will put it on the lowest setting and go from there. Anyone had any experience with a small yapper?? This is a last resort or we will both stay home!

The site also said small-medium sized bark collar, the same voltage that would be used on a basset hound sized dog will be going through your pom, doesn't that seem a little harsh to you?)
I would never use anything that would cause physical pain (let alone pay $80 for a device that would shock my dog)while training, it may have a negative result. Your dog may become submissive and scared of you as a result.

i have a loud barker too my maggie a rat terrier. but i would never do that to her.

As you seem to be doing everything right (taking her with you, exercising her), it may simply be a part of her nature. Zapping her for a personality trait doesn't seem the best route to me (we don't zap people who talk too much).
I have a miniature dachshund and he, also, is a barker. He doesn't bark to annoy - he just happens to be vocal.
Electric collars aren't bad tools when used properly, but I just can't see this being a proper use.

As long as the collar is intended for a dog the SIZE of your dog, I'm sure it won't hurt her. As long as it's used properly, it's no worse than a "choke" chain or other type of training collar. The one thing you might consider is that they do have an "ultrasonic" bark collar now. It emits a highpitched tone when the dog barks. Dogs can hear it but we cannot (or it's very quiet if we can). I've heard they are just about as effective as the shock collars.
In any case. if you do try the shock collar, just make sure you take it off at night and that she never wears it when you aren't around. No matter what type of collar you chose, training collars are generally only intended for supervised use and injury can result if they're left on 24/7 or when the dog is unattended. Good luck. I DAMN hate yapping little dogs!
Make sure you do your research first before buying an electronic collar. I have the same problem with my little pom girl, she just turned a year old on halloween. I have tried everything to get her to stop and most of the time a strong "no" does the trick but if she really feels threatened or she hears something outside at night she goes crazy. I'm now considering a shock collar as a new method but i'm still doing my research; you should do the same before hurrying to "shut her up".
There are bark collars specifically made for small breed dogs. You may also want to shave a small patch of fur off her neck where the probes touch the skin. I highly recommend this as I am an owner of a full sized pure bred yappy collie. If you shave this small area there is better contact and the little "zap" they get is much more effective, ohhh and it will also help the battery last longer. Good luck.
I understand (my poodle shakes %26 rattles his tags ALL the time, and he barks whenever someone's at the door), but she is SO small! I know it's for a good cause, but really, it'd cause her pain and stress. Her personality, affection, and even her eating habits might change! PLEASE think before you do this to her!
honestly i am totally against any sort of collar that shocks. would you want a necklace that jolted you every time you speak? although you take your puppy everywhere, are you properly socializing her? (didn't you see on jackass when they put those on eachother?) it sounds like she probably gets spooked pretty easily, and probably has some sort of attachment issue (she may be being over-protective of you because she's so attached). i think it's time you get her a friend puppy and start leaving her home. there is no reason you have to take her EVERYWHERE! aside from that, that is a pommie for you. they are very high energy and vocal dogs..if you didn't want that in your pet you should've studied up first and selected a quieter breed of dog!
Oh no, please don't use the e collar. Your 8 MO is in infant yet. She will not be fully mature til she's a year or more. Do a search on "positive dog training" and you'll find many good books. Pat Miller, Jean Donaldson are but two terrific authors. I'm guessing your pup doesn't understand what you want.teach her..love her.don't hurt her. E collars should only be used by those trained in their correct use. There's a lot more to it than just "charging it up". If you must, try a citronella collar first -- it doesn't hurt quite as much as the e collar. And yes -- you should try out the e collar on yourself first.

I DAMN hate yapping little dogs!
Make sure you do your research first before buying an electronic collar. I have the same problem with my little pom girl, she just turned a year old on halloween. I have tried everything to get her to stop and most of the time a strong "no" does the trick but if she really feels threatened or she hears something outside at night she goes crazy. I'm now considering a shock collar as a new method but i'm still doing my research; you should do the same before hurrying to "shut her up".
There are bark collars specifically made for small breed dogs. You may also want to shave a small patch of fur off her neck where the probes touch the skin. I highly recommend this as I am an owner of a full sized pure bred yappy collie. If you shave this small area there is better contact and the little "zap" they get is much more effective, ohhh and it will also help the battery last longer. Good luck.
I understand (my poodle shakes %26 rattles his tags ALL the time, and he barks whenever someone's at the door), but she is SO small! I know it's for a good cause, but really, it'd cause her pain and stress. Her personality, affection, and even her eating habits might change! PLEASE think before you do this to her!
honestly i am totally against any sort of collar that shocks. would you want a necklace that jolted you every time you speak? although you take your puppy everywhere, are you properly socializing her? (didn't you see on jackass when they put those on eachother?) it sounds like she probably gets spooked pretty easily, and probably has some sort of attachment issue (she may be being over-protective of you because she's so attached). i think it's time you get her a friend puppy and start leaving her home. there is no reason you have to take her EVERYWHERE! aside from that, that is a pommie for you. they are very high energy and vocal dogs..if you didn't want that in your pet you should've studied up first and selected a quieter breed of dog!
Oh no, please don't use the e collar. Your 8 MO is in infant yet. She will not be fully mature til she's a year or more. Do a search on "positive dog training" and you'll find many good books. Pat Miller, Jean Donaldson are but two terrific authors. I'm guessing your pup doesn't understand what you want.teach her..love her.don't hurt her. E collars should only be used by those trained in their correct use. There's a lot more to it than just "charging it up". If you must, try a citronella collar first -- it doesn't hurt quite as much as the e collar. And yes -- you should try out the e collar on yourself first.

mine grunts and snorts and sniffles and snufles but the she also makes a kind of slurping, grinding sounds because she grinds her teeth. oh, and have you ever seen the old three stooges movies? when she snores she sucks in the normal snorey way, but when she let's it out, she sounds like a sputtering motorboat!
Their personality. Babysat a pug for a while. Thought she was ugly at first glance but quickly she grew on me. Now I think the little critters are adorable. This pug would pant like crazy and made a kind of ssssing sound as she shivered (it was summertime so she wasn't cold). She snorted too, especially as she was napping.
